Mr. Parise's Turkey Spectacular
1. Get a turkey (allow 1-2 days for thawing if frozen). 2. Buy a large roasting bag. 3. Spread a liberal amount of softened butter, salt and pepper between the turkey's skin and breast meat. 4. Place a chopped onion, carrots, celery, a sliced apple or orange, and roasting herbs (rosemary, oregano, thyme, etc.) inside the cavity of the bird. 5. Liberally season the outside of the bird with salt and pepper. 6. Place your turkey in the roasting bag (follow directions on box) 7. Place a small amount of water or vegetable stock in the bag along with any extra veggies. 8. Place turkey in your roasting pan UPSIDE DOWN (breast meat down) 9. Tie off bag and make a few slits in the top of the bag (follow directions on bag) 10. Cook until internal meat temp. is at least 165 degrees. Look online for approximate cooking time for the size of your turkey. No basting necessary. Keep oven closed. The more you open it, the longer it will take, and the drier the meat will be. Note: look at the cooking times included with the roasting bag, it will be less time than an unbaked turkey. 11. Take turkey out of oven. Flip right side up. Carve, make your gravy, and enjoy! 1. *How Accurate Is 12 Years a Slave?
1. Station Rotation - you will spend 20 minutes in each session Station A: Watch Crash Course - Slavery and answer the following questions. You will watch together on Mr. Parise's iPad and answer the questions collaboratively, though each individual student needs to write their own answers. Answer in a Google Doc or wherever you and save notes. 1. In what ways was the South’s slave based economy intertwined with the Market Revolution? 2. What were economic “costs”/effects of a reliance on King Cotton in the South? 3. Describe the yeoman farmer AND his support of slavery when most didn’t own any slaves. 4. In what ways did slaves resist the dehumanization? 5. How many slaves, rather than resist, ran away AND who assisted in their flight? 6. Describe Vesey and Turner’s rebellions and their effects. 7. What are the more common forms of resistance AND why is this important? Station B: Begin the Antebellum Reform PSA project For this assignment you will be creating a short video Public Service Announcement (PSA) for one of the major reform movements during the period of Antebellum Reform. Your PSA should promote awareness for an Antebellum reform movement of your choice. You may work with a partner or by yourself. 1. Do some research on PSAs. Go to youtube and watch a few. What do the look like, sound like? How are they organized? Get a good feel for them. Here a place to get started. 2. Research your specific reform movement. Gather information about it. Use the resources below to get started. You may also use any other source of reliable historical information. The sources may below, however, may provide you will all the info you need.
3. Your PSA should include the following information (this is what you need to find in your research): A. Describe/explain the societal problem(s) that your movement was attempting to address. B. What are the specific goals (changes in society) that the movement is attempting to achieve? C. Who led or played an important role in the movement? What did they do? What was their motivation to get involved? Your project also needs to include at least significant one quote from a leader of the movement. D. When and where (if applicable) did movement occur? 4. Project Creation - You are allowed to use any video making app of your choice. Adobe Spark Video may be the easiest to use, but it is not what you are required to use. It should be 1-3 minutes in length and have an appropriate balance of text and imagery. 5. Due: Sunday 11/21 by 8:00 pm (you will 30 minutes of work time in class on Friday) Station C: - Practicing Doc/HIPP Analysis with Mr. Parise using the Antebellum Reform DBQ. HW: A.
