Hi Everyone,
Wow. That escalated quickly. Here we are the first day of remote online learning! Who would have thought that when we first started discussing Coronavirus in class a couple of weeks ago, we'd be at this point (remember when I was just "mildly concerned"). But now we all have a part to play in keeping each other safe! We owe it to each other to do whatever we can do to protect each other. Please socially distance yourself from others as much as possible (avoid groups, public places, etc. And stay home!), but maintain your social connections in other ways as much as possible (phone, online, FaceTime, etc.) We can socially distance without being lonely. I know this is a crazy time, but over the next couple of weeks I will be providing you ways to continue our study of AP US History from home. You can expect class to proceed in the following ways: 1. At the normal start of class time, you should visit the class website and see the agenda for that day. The agenda will have all the information and resources that you will need to complete that day's assignment. You will also see a corresponding Google Classroom assignment for that day's class. You should expect that each class will have a task for you to complete with something to submit to Google Classroom at the end. If you are an early bird, the class agenda will often be posted the night before class, and Google Classroom assignments will usually post at 8:00 am the day of class. 2. If you have questions about assignments, don't hesitate to email or message through Google Classroom. I will do my absolute best to answer emails sent to me before 2:45 pm the same day. But if you do email after 2:45 pm, I may not be able to email back until the next day. 3. Expect things to change and be flexible. Circumstances seem to be changing by the minute in unpredictable ways. We are in this together, and will all need to be able to roll with things as much as possible. We are all trying our best to navigate a situation the none of us have ever been in before. Take care of yourselves and your families! I look forward to the time when we can all be in class together again! Continue below for today's assignment! Mr. Parise Today's Assignment 1. Watch: Why Cities Are Still So Segregated 2. 2. Cold War 3. Containment Strategy (Sect. of State George Kennan)
A. "Truman Doctrine" – Truman pledges to give money and supplies (weapons) to Turkey and Greece to prevent spread of communism. PRESIDENT HARRY S. TRUMAN'S ADDRESS BEFORE A JOINT SESSION OF CONGRESS, MARCH 12, 1947 "It would be an unspeakable tragedy if these countries, which have struggled so long against overwhelming odds, should lose that victory for which they sacrificed so much. Collapse of free institutions and loss of independence would be disastrous not only for them but for the world. Discouragement and possibly failure would quickly be the lot of neighboring peoples striving to maintain their freedom and independence. Should we fail to aid Greece and Turkey in this fateful hour, the effect will be far reaching to the West as well as to the East. We must take immediate and resolute action. I therefore ask the Congress to provide authority for assistance to Greece and Turkey in the amount of $400,000,000 for the period ending June 30, 1948. In requesting these funds, I have taken into consideration the maximum amount of relief assistance which would be furnished to Greece out of the $350,000,000 which I recently requested that the Congress authorize for the prevention of starvation and suffering in countries devastated by the war. In addition to funds, I ask the Congress to authorize the detail of American civilian and military personnel to Greece and Turkey, at the request of those countries, to assist in the tasks of reconstruction, and for the purpose of supervising the use of such financial and material assistance as may be furnished. I recommend that authority also be provided for the instruction and training of selected Greek and Turkish personnel. Finally, I ask that the Congress provide authority which will permit the speediest and most effective use, in terms of needed commodities, supplies, and equipment, of such funds as may be authorized. If further funds, or further authority, should be needed for purposes indicated in this message, I shall not hesitate to bring the situation before the Congress. On this subject the Executive and Legislative branches of the Government must work together. This is a serious course upon which we embark. I would not recommend it except that the alternative is much more serious. The United States contributed $341,000,000,000 toward winning World War II. This is an investment in world freedom and world peace. The assistance that I am recommending for Greece and Turkey amounts to little more than 1 tenth of 1 per cent of this investment. It is only common sense that we should safeguard this investment and make sure that it was not in vain. The seeds of totalitarian regimes are nurtured by misery and want. They spread and grow in the evil soil of poverty and strife. They reach their full growth when the hope of a people for a better life has died. We must keep that hope alive. The free peoples of the world look to us for support in maintaining their freedoms. If we falter in our leadership, we may endanger the peace of the world -- and we shall surely endanger the welfare of our own nation. Great responsibilities have been placed upon us by the swift movement of events. B. Marshall Plan – US Gov. provided billions of aid and economic investment into war ravaged Western European nations ($13 billion - nearly $140 billion in 2017 dollars). Goal was to prevent the spread of Soviet Union (communism) by strengthening the capitalist countries of Western Europe. Countries also became exclusive trade partners with US (benefit to US industry/economy). US Foreign Aid over time. C. NATO (1949) – alliance to oppose Soviet expansion into Western Europe. Soviets form Warsaw Pact to oppose Nato (Chamberlin calls it the Iron Curtin) HW: For your assigned topic/event:
