Hi Everyone,
Today's assignment is taking the Midterm Exam! Head over to Google Classroom to begin. It will be live at 8:00 am Wednesday April 1 (not an April fools joke) and open until Friday April 3 at 5:00 pm. You must complete the test by Friday at 5:00 pm. You are allowed to use your review sheet and/or notes you've taken while studying for the exam, but this is an individual effort only. You are not allowed to work together with other students. Any students caught collaborating will receive a zero on the exam (make sure your answers to the written response questions are unique to you!) Good luck!

Hi Everyone,
Today we will continue to prepare for the midterm exam. The exam will be open note so you should work on completing the review sheet so that you can use that as an approved "cheat-sheet" during the exam. Today I will be having a live video review session from 11:00 to 11:30 am to go over the review sheet and answer student questions. I highly encourage you to make all efforts to attend as this will be your best opportunity to ask questions and hear me go over everything. I understand that some of you may have required commitments in other classes, but this is the only time I am able to hold a live video session tomorrow. If you can't be there, I will be recording the video review and providing you with a link to view it on your own. If after viewing the video review, you still have questions, please email me. Any questions that you have about exam content (which require a response by me prior to the exam), must be sent by 3:00 pm on Tuesday 3/31. So make sure you have taken a detailed look over everything before then! Also, I wanted to let you know that the test will be taken via Google Classroom and will be open for you to take starting at 8:00 am on Wednesday 4/1. And because it's a test, you will only have until Friday 4/3 at 5:00 pm to complete it. I will not accept submissions after Friday 4/3 at 5:00 pm. Beyond the video review, you should spend the rest of class time today preparing for the exam. Again, here is the review outline: A. Topics/Concepts:

Here is the info you need to join the meeting (click the link when you are ready to join): Join Zoom Meeting https://zoom.us/j/681641585 Meeting ID: 681 641 585 Today's Assignment Today you will begin learning about the 3 most important Sociological paradigms (or theoretical perspectives). You should think of a paradigm as a particular way of looking at the world, and analyzing why it works the way it does. A helpful analogy is to think of a paradigm as a window. Think about the windows of your house. Each window looks out onto the same world, but each window provides a different view (or perspective) on the world. Looking out of a window on the first floor allows you to see things differently than if you were looking out of a second floor window. Each window provides you with the ability to see some things better than others (and have their own advantages and disadvantages). The first floor window might allow you to see the ground in greater detail, but the second floor window might allow you to see farther into the distance. Each window serves a different purpose. The 3 major Sociological paradigms each provide a different analytical "window", or view, of the world. One is not inherently better than another, but may be more useful at different times. It should also be said that you may find yourself drawn to one more than another (one may match up more closely with how you tend to view the way society works). Assignment #6 - A. Watch: Sociological Theories Review Video B. Watch: Structural Functionalism C. Watch: Conflict Theory D. Watch: Symbolic Interactionism E. Watch and answer the questions below: The Three Major Sociological Paradigms A. What is a paradigm? What is a theoretical paradigm? B. Is sociology more concerned with the Macro or Micro? C. What kinds of issues are "macro", and which are "micro"? D. Explain structural functionalism. Which early sociologist is credited with this theoretical paradigm? E. Explain an example of how this theory would look at something in society. F. Explain the difference between manifest and latent functions. G. What is social dysfunction? H. What are some problems with structural functionalism? An example? I. Explain conflict theory. J. Explain Marx's "class conflict theory." K. Explain another conflict theory (race or gender). L. What are some problems with conflict theory? An example? M. Explain symbolic interactionism. Which early sociologist is credited with this theoretical paradigm? N. What does it mean to say that for symbolic interactionism there is no "big T truth"? O. What are some problems with symbolic interactionism? An example? Hi Everyone,
Wow. That escalated quickly. Here we are the first day of remote online learning! Who would have thought that when we first started discussing Coronavirus in class a couple of weeks ago, we'd be at this point (remember when I was just "mildly concerned"). But now we all have a part to play in keeping each other safe! We owe it to each other to do whatever we can do to protect each other. Please socially distance yourself from others as much as possible (avoid groups, public places, etc. And stay home!), but maintain your social connections in other ways as much as possible (phone, online, FaceTime, etc.) We can socially distance without being lonely. I know this is a crazy time, but over the next couple of weeks I will be providing you ways to continue our study of sociology from home. You can expect class to proceed in the following ways: 1. At the normal start of class time, you should visit the class website and see the agenda for that day. The agenda will have all the information and resources that you will need to complete that day's assignment. You will also see a corresponding Google Classroom assignment for that day's class. You should expect that each class will have a task for you to complete with something to submit to Google Classroom at the end. 2. For the most part, assignments will be designed to be be completed within the normal class time, and assignments will be "due" by the end of that class period. The idea being that during the normal Sociology class time, you are working to complete that day's sociology assignment. With that being said, I know that not everyone will be able to complete a given assignment during the normal class time. To allow for the flexibility that we all need at this time, you will have up to ONE WEEK to turn in any assignment for FULL CREDIT. However, I will not accept assignments after one week. 3. If you have questions about assignments, don't hesitate to email or message through Google Classroom. I will do my absolute best to answer emails sent to me before 2:45 pm the same day. But if you do email after 2:45 pm, I may not be able to email back until the next day. 4. Expect things to change and be flexible. Circumstances seem to be changing by the minute in unpredictable way. We are in this together, and will all need to be able to roll with things as much as possible. We are all trying our best to navigate a situation the none of us have ever been in before. Take care of yourselves and your families! I look forward to the time when we can all be in class together again! Below you will find today's assignment. Mr. Parise Today's Assignment 1. Complete Assignment #24 - Breakfast Club Questions. Go to Google Classroom for the document with the questions. 2. If you were not present in class to view the film, your alternative assignment is to write a 1-2 page (typed, double spaced, size 12) essay about a label or category that others have placed you in during your life. You should turn this is to Google Classroom Assignment #4. You should discuss:
